Life coaching

Is there something stopping you from living

a rich and meaningful life?

While some external factors can prevent us from living a good life (such as an economic downturn, lack of money, etc.) most things that hold us back are psychological traits. These can be things like insecurities, procrastination, perfectionism, lack of direction in life, unhealthy habits, anxiety and so on.While not always easy to spot, certain psychological traits can lead us to engage in activities and behaviours that are detrimental to both physical and mental health, and prevent us from living the life we wish to lead. For instance, reaching for the bottle of wine at the end of a stressful day (which is instantly regretted in the morning), pushing away those that are closest to us through petty arguments, shirking away from possible opportunities for fear of failure, or even the persistence of negative thought patterns that dominate and prevent us from reaching our full potential. When we don’t take the time to recognise our negative traits or actions, and explore why they might persist, they can escalate and prevent us from living a contented and happy life. If all of this sounds familiar, then a life coach can work with you to help you to achieve your goals and make the changes you wish to make in your life.

What is life coaching?

Life coaching comes in many different forms. However, simply put, life coaching aims to help people meet goals in their lives. Life coaching can guide people towards new methods to help them solve problems they are facing in their personal lives or at work and can set them on a path to achieving their ambitions. It can be delivered face-to-face, over the phone, or even by email. Typically, life coaching will look to help individuals find their own answers to 3 important questions: 1. What do I want to do with my life? 2. What is stopping me from doing it? 3. What am I going to do about it?These are simple questions. However, the answers are not always easy to find or articulate. Fortunately, life coaches help you to find the answers that are right for you. Like a personal trainer for your life and career, a life coach will work with you to improve all areas in your life by helping you work out where you want to go and how you will get there. Life coaches seek to help people to actualise their full potential and lead purposeful and meaningful lives.Life coaching can help people identify their life values and clarify what they want from life. It can help you to set effective goals to meet your ambitions, monitor progress on your journey of change, help you to stay focused and challenged, make sure you stick to your commitments and take you beyond your initial ambitions through continual reassessment and re-examination of your ideas, plans, and strategies.

How can life coaching help me?

Life coaching can help with issues big and small. It can help whether you’re stuck in a rut or already feel successful. Ultimately, it can help take you closer to the life you really want to lead. So whether you want to find a more satisfying career, need support dealing with tricky relationship issues, or simply want to get better with time management, life coaching can be beneficial to help you find solutions and help you to achieve your goals.

Life coaching can help you create sustainable change for the better in your own life. Whilst many people can make changes in their lives easily, keeping a programme of change enacted is often much more difficult. Often this means we don’t achieve our goals and it makes it harder the next time we try to make a change in our life as we expect failure. However, a life coach can help you stay on track, avoid blockages to your progress, and make sure the changes you make are the right ones.

Other goals life coaching can help with include things like:

  • Making wise decisions
  • Finding more meaning and purpose in life
  • Becoming happier and more satisfied with life
  • Dealing with relationship issues
  • Understanding and managing their feelings and emotions
  • Building confidence
  • Career dilemmas
  • Being clearer about what you want from life.

Finding solutions to these challenging issues are some of the realistic benefits of life coaching that you can expect. Some life coaching approaches help push you towards your goals by changing the way you think about things and making sure you keep motivated. This method can be great for shorter-term goals, however, for longer-term change that is more sustainable, it is worth seeking a life coach using a psychological approach.

Who am I?

Through my personal experiences, I have always held a strong interest in human suffering and satisfaction. My own anxieties and fears have lead me to pursue a career in this field meaning that I bring not only professional but personal experiences to my work as a life coach. I offer a warm and down to earth approach to life coaching, and seek to help others to identify what gives them meaning and purpose in their lives as a means of achieving happiness. My training, education, and experience in the field mean that my work as a life-coach is firmly grounded in an understanding of psychological theory and approaches. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, I subsequently pursued my interest in psychology by completing an MSc in psychology at Regent’s University London. I then completed a postgraduate diploma in philosophical counselling before being trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy by Dr. Russ Harris. Throughout my 6 years of experience in a one to one setting in both therapy and coaching, I have kept my approach present through engaging with various additional diplomas, including completing an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Diploma and an Emotional Intelligence Diploma. My interest in Emotional Intelligence led me to create Mindowl.org, a platform dedicated to online courses on Emotional Intelligence that attracted 200 students in just 3 months of launch and 5k followers on Facebook.

Why is my life coaching approach different?

When you google ‘life-coaching’ you will be faced with an array of options and it can be hard to determine which style of coaching is right for you. There are many well-intentioned coaches out there, but not everyone has a system for behavioural change that’s grounded in a psychological approach that’s backed up by science.

This is where my approach is different, it is based on Acceptance and Commitment Coaching (ACC) which draws on the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This evidence-based approach seeks to address psychological barriers that prevent us from achieving our goals. Rather than trying to change how someone thinks, an AC coach guides an individual to increase their psychological flexibility and learn to respond more mindfully to their thoughts and emotions in order to take more effective action in their lives.

Life-coaching based on ACC focuses on developing your psychological flexibility. This involves improving your ability to feel and think with openness, to attend voluntarily to your experience of the present moment, and to move your life in directions that are important to you, building habits that allow you to live life in accordance with your values and aspirations. The ACC approach is also about accepting unwanted thoughts and feelings rather than avoiding or suppressing them. Using mindfulness, this method of life-coaching helps you to get out of automatic ways of behaviour, change the way you relate to your feelings and get more clarity in what’s important to you. Although most people now relate mindfulness to meditation, it is a skill that can be developed without the need to formally meditate. As a life-coach trained in the ACC method I will work with you to achieve meaningful and long-term changes in your life for the better. We will do this by working through the six steps for transformation and change based on the well-established ACC method, these six steps are:

1

Being present

learning how to pay attention to the present moment with openness, flexibility, and curiosity.

2

Defining valued directions

taking the time to clarify what is important to you and what your values are.

3

Taking committed action

helping you to take effective action towards goals that are in line with your values.

4

Creating a bigger sense of Self

learning to observe, and be in tune with, your thoughts, feelings, and actions and increasing your self-awareness.

5

Practising acceptance

learning to be kind to yourself, recognising that goals are not achieved overnight, and realising the temporary nature of many of our experiences.

6

Using cognitive distancing

learning how to use cognitive distancing to reduce anxiety and negative thought patterns.

We will work to achieve these steps for transformation and change through a variety of ways including psychological education, modelling of helpful attitudes and behaviours, goal setting, exercises, as well as reflection and feedback.

The benefits of life coaching are vast, and I am confident that I can help you to reach your goals in many areas of your life.
